The UP government has spent Rs 3.49 crore on Chief Minister Mayawati’s eight statues installed in five memorials coming up in Lucknow. It has spent another Rs 3.37 crore on seven statues of her mentor Kanshiram, installed in the memorials.
Besides, 60 statues of elephants — the election symbol of the BSP — are being erected in these memorials at cost of Rs 52.20 crore. Each of these statues together with their granite covered pede-stals, costs Rs 87 lakh.
The information has been provided by the LDA, the nodal agency for development of these memorials, in response of an application filed by Supreme Court advocate Ravi Kant, under the Right to Information Act.
“The information, provided by LDA under the RTI Act, shows how the UP Chief Minister has misused her power and public money to fulfil her whims of installing own statues,” said Ravi Kant. He said he was going to challenge this misuse of power in the Supreme Court.
According to the information provided by LDA, the largest statue of Mayawati and Kanshiram are installed at Pratibimb in Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajaik Parivartan Stahl (Ambedkar Memorial), Gomti Nagar. These two bronze statues are 24-feet high and costs Rs 1.55 crore apiece.
Besides, there are three other statues of Maya in the same memorial — one 18-foot-high bronze statue, costing Rs 47.25 lakh and two 9-foot bronze statues of Rs 23 lakh. Two bronze statues of Kanshiram, costing Rs 58.25 lakh, are also installed there.
Another 18-foot bronze statue of Mayawati, costing Rs 47.25 lakh, is installed at the Kanshiram Memorial, a 12-feet bronze statue of Rs 20.25 lakh at Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Prateek Stahl, one 7-feet white marble statue of Rs 9-lakh at Gomti embankment near Ambedkar Memorial and another 15-feet bronze statue of Rs 47.25 lakh at Kanshiram Sanskritik Sthal, Sector-L, Kanpur Road.
An equal number of statues of Kanshiram, of same size and same cost, are installed in these memorials adjacent to the statues of Mayawati.
Under the RTI Act, LDA has provided information only about only those memorials where LDA is nodal agency.
As per information available on koshvani.up.nic.in, the official website of UP Finance Department, the government had allocated Rs 193 crore in 2008-09 to make statues and that amount was utilised. According to the website, in financial year 2009-10, the government has so far allocated Rs 30 lakh on this head.
